Why choose a pair of summer hiking socks?

Because each season is different, and you obviously shouldn't use the same socks for a freedom hike in Cape Verde as for a trek in Finnish Lapland, it's essential to select your gear based on the time of year when you will be going out. Hiking socks are no exception to this rule, so here are some advantages and tips to help you choose the right pair of summer hiking socks for your summer hikes.

The advantages of summer hiking socks

Summer hiking socks are more breathable

The summer hiking sock is much more breathable than other types of socks. The summer hiking sock typically contains synthetic materials. They allow air in your shoe to circulate better, reducing your perspiration. This is the case, for example, with the Hike+ Lite Crew from Icebreaker, which is highly breathable and made up of nearly 40% synthetic fibres like Nylon and Lycra.

Summer hiking socks wick moisture away faster and dry quicker

In addition to limiting your perspiration upfront with better breathability, choosing a pair of summer hiking socks will help to promote moisture wicking to the outside of the socks. For example, the Trekking Merino Light from X-Socks is a pair of summer hiking socks equipped with a patented complex ventilation system that wicks humid air outwards with each step and brings fresh, dry air under the sole of your foot.

Summer hiking socks are lighter

To avoid carrying unnecessary weight during long and strenuous hours of walking, summer hiking socks are lighter than their winter counterparts. The Hike+ Lite Mini by Icebreaker meets this lightweight criterion, as every gram counts in the pursuit of performance.

Summer hiking socks resist odours better

Thanks to their composition and anti-odour treatment, summer hiking socks have excellent odour management. The merino wool socks are a perfect example. This ultra-fine wool has very effective anti-odour properties, as seen in the Trekking Merino Light from X-Socks, a particularly high-performing summer hiking sock.

How to choose your summer hiking socks?

However, there is no perfect hiking sock that can meet the expectations of all hikers. You will need to make choices and opt for the summer hiking sock that is best suited to the type of hike you will be undertaking. Here are a few tips to help you choose the right pair of summer hiking socks.

Summer hiking socks, high or low?

This question is entirely legitimate, as each type of hiking sock has its advantages and disadvantages. The main takeaway is this: low socks offer freedom around the ankle and are lightweight, while high socks will reduce the risk of blisters and irritation if you wear high top hiking shoes. A pair of summer hiking socks like the Run+ Ultralight Mini from Icebreaker would be perfect if you use low top hiking shoes, for example. For high shoes, you should opt for a hiking sock like the Icebreaker Hike Basic Light Crew.

Choose your summer hiking socks based on your perspiration level

Another criterion to consider when choosing a pair of summer hiking socks is their breathability. Walking with damp feet will not only be uncomfortable but will also increase the risk of blisters. It is therefore advisable to choose a pair of breathable socks if you frequently encounter this type of issue. A pair of summer hiking socks like the Gel Protech Trek from Monnet, which is comfortable and robust, in addition to being breathable.
