New Balance: A Major Player in the Footwear World
New Balance is an American brand, specialising in the design of sports and lifestyle shoes. It was founded in 1906 by William R. Riley, an orthopaedic shoemaker. The idea came to him to create an insole with three supports, referencing the stable position of his hens' claws. In its early days, New Balance only offered shoes for sports: running, baseball, tennis, and even boxing.
The brand managed to carve out a niche in a highly competitive sector, launching its first running shoe: the Trackster. It was a resounding success, becoming one of the most popular running shoes among American university teams. In 1960, Jim Davis decided to purchase the New Balance company. To this day, he remains the sole owner of the brand.
In 1978, New Balance launched its first textile collection on the market. Outfits made from Gore-Tex® and a wide range of jerseys and running shorts were made available. Its success soared, and in 1982, New Balance became one of the sponsors of the New York Marathon.
The American brand is now the fourth largest manufacturer of sports clothing and equipment in the world. It owns its own production facilities located in Europe and the United States.
