From the moment he discovered caving, Fernand Petzl set his mind on improving the gear he used to explore the depths. In the workshop of his family home in Grenoble, he created, invented and developed tools to move through the caves he was so drawn to, more efficiently and safely. In 1970, the Petzl brand was officially launched, and the range quickly expanded. With the help of his sons, Fernand developed and designed Petzl climbing gear, Petzl ropes, Petzl carabiners, Petzl harnesses and also Petzl ice axes. The latter, designed for all disciplines, can be used for glacier trekking as well as modern mixed climbing. Others, such as the Gully ice axe, are built for technical mountaineering or steep skiing. All of them, lightweight and reliable, are certified and guaranteed.
Petzl ice axes have evolved alongside techniques and practices. Today, advances in technology and design allow the Grenoble-based brand to offer ice axes for every discipline — from glacier trekking to steep skiing, from ice climbing to modern mixed climbing.
For glacier travel, easy snow routes, ski touring and steep skiing, Petzl offers lightweight and high-performance ice axes with a comfortable grip. The Ride ice axe, for example, is compact and ultralight for freeride and ski touring. Its excellent pick penetration, steel head and curved shaft make it a highly functional ice axe. In the same category, the Glacier ice axe is ideal for glacier trekking thanks to its outstanding penetration on hard snow and ice. Its anodized aluminium shaft with a machined grip provides the secure hold needed for this type of activity.
Petzl's classic mountaineering ice axes are versatile tools for moderate-grade routes across varied terrain. The Summit ice axe, for example, offers an excellent price-to-performance ratio. It features a slight curve to provide the clearance needed for steep and icy terrain. It can also be used as a walking stick, a self-arrest tool, or even for traction. For technical mountaineering and challenging routes on snow, ice or mixed terrain, Petzl ice axes are designed to be agile, ergonomic, with great grip and outstanding pick penetration. This is notably the case of the Quark ice axe, which features the Ice blade for secure placements regardless of ice type. Modular in design, it adapts to its environment — whether in a snow couloir, ice chute, north face or ice fall.
For ice climbing and dry tooling, Petzl has developed highly technical and high-performance ice axes. The Nomic ice axe is one of them. A benchmark in its field, it is perfectly balanced and fitted with counterweights for an exceptional swing. Its geometry and dual grip offer multiple hand positions and easy hand changes. Modular, it can be fine-tuned to suit the route. The Ergonomic ice axe is designed for steep ice and dry tooling. Its steeply angled handle provides the ideal angle for prolonged hangs and greater pulling power. Also fitted with a dual grip, it is modular and allows for easy hand changes.
