ABS Airbag, for safe winters

The story of the brand ABS Airbag began in 1970 when a forest ranger accidentally discovered that he stayed more on the surface of the snow if he had game strapped to his shoulders. The foundations of buoyancy were laid, and tests with large air-filled balloons were conducted. The idea of the avalanche airbag was born. 

The patent was filed in 1980 when Peter Aschauer founded the company ABS after experiencing an avalanche situation. He then began developing a system that would allow an avalanche victim to increase their own volume in a matter of seconds, thus improving their chances of survival.

By 1985, the first ABS avalanche backpack was presented to the public. Since then, the brand has continuously developed and innovated to offer increasingly advanced technical equipment. In 2015, 30 years after the founding of ABS Airbag, the brand remains a market leader with 50,000 systems produced each season. 

Since 2018, new airbag systems have been integrated into ABS backpacks, such as the S.Light system and the S.Cape system. These highly considered safety materials optimise weight without ever compromising on safety and functionality. Some airbag backpacks also include integrated harnesses for better support. 

ABS backpacks for all expeditions

Beyond airbag backpacks, ABS offers a whole range of backpacks dedicated to the mountains. Designed for high-altitude outings, they include all the expected features up there. In addition to a safety compartment for integrating a shovel and probe, they provide enhanced comfort thanks to the integrated back support.

Recently, ABS has also introduced inflatable snowshoes. Small in size, lightweight but with a large surface area for flotation, they allow you to move even in the deepest snow. These snowshoes are a must-have in your pack for outings where snow may still be abundant!
