Kryptonite: Safety First!
It all began in 1971 when Michael Zane invented the first Kryptonite bike U-lock. Following its creation, he embarked on a journey across the United States to raise awareness about the importance of securing bicycles. Thus, Kryptonite was born! The brand gained public recognition in 1972 through an experiment conducted in New York, a city notorious for its numerous bike thefts, approximately 100,000 each year. Michael decided to attach a bike to a traffic sign using one of his locks. The removable parts of the bike were stolen on the first night, but the frame remained intact for over 30 days, resisting numerous theft attempts. With this boost, the brand developed, leading to many innovations: the invention of an integrated locking mechanism in 1974, numerous awards in the 80s, and the creation of the NYC model...
The NYC Post challenged Michael Zane in 1994: to prove that a brand new racing bike could remain attached to a pole for 48 hours, thanks to his NYC lock. The challenge was met, and the NYC model became the brand's iconic lock. After multiple evolutions, Kryptonite launched the Gravity range in 2015, which secures wheels, preventing thieves from removing them. It wasn't until 2017 that the brand ventured into bike lights, launching the “Street Light” range with USB rechargeable lights.
